COURSE DESCRIPTION: Top of Page © 1998- Dr. John E. Alsup - all rights reserved
Objectives: At the conclusion of the course a student should be able to:
1. distinguish clearly between the Greek noun, verb, and participle;
2. recognize and identify the principal and syntactical units in New
Testament Greek;
3. explain the significance of the primary syntactical relationships in
New
Testament Greek;
4. recall a minimum of basic vocabulary;
5. read sentences typical of the New Testament;
6. recognize some of the importance of language study for biblical and
theological work.
LOGISTICS:
There are five modes of learning and evaluation that will be used in this
course:
1. Daily class participation is expected. There is no substitute for
regular day by day study in a new
language. Class participation will not be "graded," but it is
important!
Students must feel free to
try—errors should never be a source of embarrassment but an occasion
for learning.
2. Five Lab Sections are led by Teaching Assistants to aid the student in
mastering the material. Tutorial assistance will
be available Monday through Thursday from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00 -
9:00 p.m. for students desiring individual help.
3. Written exercises which accompany classwork will be checked to monitor
progress but will not be graded.
4. Four one-hour quizzes and two three-hour examinations will be given
during this course. The quizzes will serve to
evaluate the progress made at particular points during the course. The
examinations will check the cumulative learning of the student. In the
judgment of the instructor the student's progress must
indicate satisfactory preparation for Bi 216 in the Fall in order for the
student to pass the course.
5. Review on one's own and/or in the spontaneous formation of study groups
at library or elsewhere (Website consultation encouraged).
