I Peter 3:18-22
Step IV: Broader Context
(FS) On baptism one might compare Romans 6:3ff for points of similarity and difference. And the lordship affirmations at the end of the pericope sound much like the affirmations of the Book of Revelation.
OT/Jewish backgrounds to v. 19 may prove to be very helpful here: The rabbinic traditions of Enoch's descent to the underworld to declare condemnation to the generation of Noah - the most lost of all generations - may be a direct conversation partner with this pericope. They are similar in general but quite distinctive at the bottom line: I Peter offers the gospel, not condemnation and stops short of speculating on the outcome [cf. Goppelt I Peter Commentary @ vv. 19f].
